Once again the Chelmsford Checkers Inline Skater Hockey team notched up yet another Championship win after their British & English achievement in November of last year. From this they automatically qualified to take part in the European Championship tournament in Kaarst in Germany last weekend against teams from Germany, Switzerland, Austria and two other British teams. On Saturday they had a good start with a win against the English team Borehamwood Lionhearts. The second game was lost to a very formidable Bissendorfer Panthers from Germany. The third game of the day was against Eagles Bassecourt from Switzerland which ended in a draw. The final game was a good win against Bad Worishofen Tigers also from Germany. After a very exhausting day they retired to bed looking forward to the challenges on Sunday where they needed to win the next 2 games to gain them a place in the final. This they did against SHC Buix from Switzerland and then again playing Eagles Bassecourt. This meant they were playing in the final against host team Kaarst Crash Eagles. With a squad of only 8 players and 1 goal keeper against Eagles 18 players and 2 goal keepers the Checkers looked swamped by the sheer size of the opposition. However, this did not deter them and as ever with coach Danny Oliver calling the play they scored 2 very early goals which not only surprised Crash Eagles but also lowered their spirit. In a very hot and humid rink the Checkers, tired and exhausted played the full three periods with their hearts on their sleeves. The atmosphere was electric with most of the fans supporting the Checkers. The final score 5 – 4 went to the ever deserving Chelmsford Checkers. At the presentation ceremony after the celebrations Chelmsford Checkers Captain Stevie (Wonder) Woodford was awarded a place in the “Dream Team” as best forward of the tournament. Now What. With the winning Pee Wee team now playing in the next age group sadly there is a shortage of players coming through. Joan Oliver manager says they are recruiting players male or female between the ages of 6yrs – 12yrs. If your child is interested in playing inline hockey then please contact her on 01277 822688. Checkers are also trying to attract sponsors for a new team strip and equipment. Please, if you think you can help then please contact Joan or Ollie on the same telephone number. |
